Here is a strange fact about Kingston-upon-Thames that you can use to spark up conversation on your trip.
Nipper the Dog was the dog in the His Masters Voice (HMV) logo. Nipper wasn’t born in Kingston but in Bristol and lived with his original owner Mark Henry Barraud for 3 years til Mark’s death in 1887. He was called Nipper because he tended to bite ankles. After Marks death his brothers took Nipper to Liverpool. When he moved to Kingston is not clear but Nipper died in 1895 and was buried in Clarence Street in Kingston, where Kingston’s Lloyds TSB is today. There is a plaque inside the bank commemorating Nipper, and a street is named Nipper Alley in his honour.
Three years after Nipper’s death, Francis Barraud painted a picture of a dog listening to a phonograph, which then inspired the HMV logo.
